The metabolism of all cells including plant cells is regulated by Calcium ions and the cell wall is generally constructed of a very thin layer of calcium ions and lipid tissue. By wrapping the aerials around the re-circulation pipe, the low frequency electromagnetic radio waves cause the de-stabilisation of Calcium Ca++ and Carbonate CO3-- ions in the water. This in turn allows extra free Calcium ions to enter the cell walls of BlanketWeed which dramatically increases its metabolism and causes it to die off. The reason Blanket Weed (Spirogyra) is so prone to this action is because of its large surface area and high growth rate.
This has a specific effect on Blanket Weed since because it has a very large surface area to volume ratio actually absorbs more free Calcium than other animals and plants causing it to over-metabolise. The result is a “burst” growth followed by the weed collapsing either completely or almost completely.
Installation
You can fit your Weedbuster anywhere on your recirculation pipe (see
diagram) where the water is under pressure. The ideal position is either just before the UV light or between the UV and the final filter. The pipe
should have water under pressure. Your pipework will most likely be corrugated which makes wrapping the aerials around them a bit tricky but try and wrap the aerials as close together as possible. The more times you loop the aerial around the better but a minimum of 10 turns is required. Tie off the aerials with the cable ties supplied.It is a good idea to put your Weedbuster inside a plastic sandwich box or similar to keep out rodents and insects and prevent accidental damage.The WBS (battery operated version) has a different aerial configuration so please read the instructions carefully before installation.
Operation
You may notice that the blanket weed appears to be growing faster once the unit has been fitted but after 3-4 weeks you will notice that it starts to die off at the ends. This dying process will continue and you should remove the dead weed to avoid blockage of pumps. Do not remove live weed once your unit has been installed, as this will just encourage it to spread. BE PATIENT, your WB unit WILL kill your weed if you give it time.
DO NOT TURN YOUR UNIT OFF DURING THE WINTER. IT SHOULD BE KEPT ON AT ALL TIMES UNLESS YOU LIVE IN A CLIMATE WHICH TRADITIONALLY FREEZES DURING THE WINTER PERIOD.
